WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS?
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density and the structural degradation of bone tissue. The word itself literally translates to “porous bone.”
Essentially, your bones become weaker and more fragile than they should be. While bone is living tissue that is constantly breaking down and rebuilding, osteoporosis occurs when that balance tips—specifically, when the body loses too much bone or makes too little of it.
Because the bones become porous and brittle, the primary concern is a significantly increased risk of fractures. These can occur from even minor stress or falls that might not typically cause a break in a healthy bone. It is often described as a “silent” disease because people frequently don’t know they have it until a fracture actually occurs.
Primary Demographic Groups
- Postmenopausal Women: This is the demographic most significantly affected. Estrogen plays a critical role in maintaining bone density, and when levels drop significantly during menopause, women often experience an accelerated rate of bone loss.
- Older Adults: While bone loss happens to everyone as they age, the risk increases substantially for individuals over the age of 50. The rate of bone breakdown eventually outpaces the body’s ability to build new bone.
- Biological Sex: Generally, women are at a much higher risk than men. This is due to both hormonal differences and the fact that women typically have less bone mass to begin with
